Transit Planning in the West Kootenay

Transit Planning in the West Kootenay

In 2011 and 2012, the Central Kootenay Service Review, West Kootenay Master Plan and the Nelson and Area Transit Recommendations were completed and adopted by the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK), Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) and City of Nelson. These plans collectively identified many priorities for improvements to transit services, and set forth the vision of an integrated transit service as a key priority.

On July 2, 2013, the West Kootenay transit systems were integrated into one overall system, bringing three (3) local governments and nine (9) transit systems together into one integrated schedule and one rider’s guide.

To date, since the restructure of West Kootenay Transit and consolidation into one riders guide in 2013, a variety of service priorities have been implemented.

In 2016, BC Transit completed the Trail and Area Service Review, intended to update transit service priorities for RDKB portions of West Kootenay Transit.

The goal of the Kootenay Lake West, Castlegar and City of Nelson Transit Future Service Plan (2020) is to update transit priorities for Kootenay Lake West, Castlegar and Area, and City of Nelson portions of West Kootenay Transit.

Why do we need Transit Future?

Transit Future creates a shared understanding between transit partners, stakeholders, and customers regarding future priorities that we will work towards in your transit system. The priorities in your plans guide transit investment that is supportive of livable communities through:

  • Offering more transportation choices
  • Meeting climate change goals by supporting mode shifts
  • Supporting smart land use plans that focus on walking, cycling and transit

As we move forward with implementing priorities in West Kootenay Transit Plans, there will be additional opportunities to be involved in the process.

Moving Forward with Technology

BC Transit is committed to continuously enhancing your experience as a rider. As part of this endeavour, we are moving forward with the installation and development of technology initiatives to improve efficiency, increase security and put you in control of your BC Transit experience.
